The Gout 1799 by James Gillray (British, 1757-1815) published by Hannah Humphrey England, 18th century Etching hand-colored with watercolor on Wove paper. A devil figure is shown biting into painful and inflamed toe joints. Gout is a metabolic condition where uric acid crystals are deposited in the joints, causing great pain. The big toe is the joint most commonly affected. The main causes are genetic factors and diet.
